Smeerenburg is a location in 80 Days. It is situated in the Svalbard archipelago in the Arctic Ocean. Svalbard used to be known as Spitsbergen, hence the Dutch name. The archipelago is approximately halfway between mainland Norway and the North Pole.

Soon after arrival, Fogg and Passepartout will encounter the Artificer Vitti Jokinen. Fogg will take Jokinen to buy a drink after hearing of his intent to mount a polar expedition, leaving Passepartout alone for the evening to contemplate the risk and rewards of such an adventure. When Fogg returns, he announces that he and Passepartout will go to the North Pole.
