Freetown is a city built by freed slaves, and serves as an important hub for people rescued from slavery by the Royal West Africa Squadron. Tourist attractions in Freetown include the ancient cotton tree growing in the city centre (a monument to freed slaves) and the oldest University in West Africa.
Passepartout may start up a conversation with a Yoruba woman, Ojuolape who has recently been freed from a slave ship. She informs the valet that she is travelling onwards to Timbuktu from the city, but the journey is a long and arduous one.
