80 Days Wiki

Cholera in Manila is a scenario in 80 Days. It is triggered when Passepartout and Phileas Fogg travel through typhoon-stricken Manila without taking care to avoid the rapid spread of cholera, causing Fogg to come down with the illness.

The illness can only be avoided in Manila if Passepartout only lets Fogg drink boiled water while there, a course of action only available if he is of a responsible character (that is, his skill is Organised or greater).

If Passepartout and Fogg board the Reina Christina with intent to fly to Acapulco, the captain will force them to disembark in Honolulu, at which point they cannot fly to Acapulco on the airship anymore.

Otherwise, Fogg may fall ill at other times during the journey while staying the night in a city, most likely the first time staying the night in a city where a doctor can be found. It is possible to travel far before this happens; for instance, it is possible to have Fogg contract cholera in Lima, even after spending several nights stuck on Pitcairn Island!

Multiple characters can warn Passepartout of Manila's cholera problem before he sets foot there.

  • Mustonen aboard the Minsk Express, if you take effort to talk to her.
  • Captain Hirosue, if you are friendly to her throughout your journey aboard the Sugawara.
  • A sailor on the Singapore dock, who will warn you about cholera if you ask about passage to Manila.

If Fogg falls ill, he will be forced to stay put for a few days after his condition worsens, with doctors attending to him, but he always recovers eventually.
