During the stay in the local hotel, Passepartout encounters an Indigenous girl of the Murri tribe working as a maid. The girl is deeply saddened by the way the white settlers have overrun her ancestral homeland and shows Passepartout a letter she plans to send to the local paper, the Moreton Bay Courier, protesting the situation.

Whilst exploring Brisbane, Passepartout runs into a submariner whom he previously met aboard the Leyden. She has broken her leg and been abandoned by Captain Rosencrans to heal in Brisbane under the care of a quack doctor who wants to amputate the limb. Desperate for a second opinion, she gives Passepartout a notice to put in the Moreton Bay Courier to find another doctor. If Passepartout accepts, he will reach Moreton Bay only to find that the newspaper is actually in the city, and after turning around for the city, discover that he has lost the notice on the way. He can lie or tell the truth to the submariner; if he tells the truth, she thank him for at least ascertaining the paper’s location and go visit the paper herself.

Later, the newspaper will reveal that despite all efforts, the submariner dies during surgery by the “quack doctor.”
